Disability Support – Department of Veterans Affairs Disability Ratings

Veterans who receive a disability rating from the VA can access Veterans Readiness and Employment (VR&E) services. These services may include job training, resume development, employment assistance, and other forms of support. Veterans are strongly advised to explore VR&E options prior to choosing coursework to ensure alignment with their career objectives. For more details or to apply for VR&E services, visit the Veterans Readiness and Employment website.

Registering with Disability & Counseling Services

Registering with the Office of Disability & Counseling Services is an important step to take before registering for classes at Polk State College.

Disability Evaluations and Academic Adjustments

It is important to understand that while disability evaluations and documentation from the VA can be beneficial when seeking academic adjustments, the criteria used by the military for disability determinations differ from those established by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Academic adjustments may include, but are not limited to:

    • Tutoring
    • Extended time on exams
    • Assistance from notetakers

Please note that a VA disability rating does not automatically entitle a student to academic accommodation. Requests for accommodations must be supported by medical documentation that details how the disability impacts learning and other significant life activities in the context of higher education.

To register with the Office of Disability & Counseling Services at Polk State, contact Dionne Formey, Coordinator for the Office of Disability & Counseling Services, at 863.292.3759 or via email at dformey@2fitfashion.com.
